The Peoples Democratic Party has demanded inquiry over the fire outbreak that occurred at the state headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC on Thursday.

The party in a statement on Friday maintained that no excuse would be accepted from the Commission if there is a complaint of non-functionality of card reader machines during the forthcoming election.

“We want to believe that INEC will come to equity with clean hands and play the role of an unbiased umpire during and after the election.

“Or how do we explain a scenario where fire razed over 5000 card reader machines just 30 days to the governorship election?”

In his own reaction, the deputy governor of the state, who is also is candidate of Zenith Labour Party for the governorship election, Mr. Agboola Ajayi alleged that the incident was an act of desperation by some persons.

According to Allen Sowore, media aide to Agboola, a probe panel must be instituted to unravel the cause of the mysterious fire.

The statement read thus, “Over 5000 card readers were lost in mysterious fire outbreak in Ondo INEC office less than 30 days to the election”.

“All the authorities concerned must immediately institute a probe. Nobody should tell us any balderdash about this. It’s simply an act of desperation.”

WesternLifeNews had reported that the office of the Independent Electoral Commission, in Akure was engulfed by fire where some card readers and documents, meant for the October 10 governorship election were burnt and destroyed.

Reacting to the incident, the INEC stated that the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, but assuring that the incident will not affect the October 10, governorship election.
