Cristiano Ronaldo has been named by Forbes as the first footballer to earn over $1 billion, Forbes announced through its Twitter handle.
According to Forbes, the Portuguese star earned $105 million in the past year (2019), making him number 4 on the 2020 Forbes list.
Ronaldo, 35, is the third athlete after Tiger Woods and Floyd Mayweather to hit the $1 billion earnings mark while still actively competing, according to Forbes.
Ronaldo raked in £85million last year from his wages and endorsement deals, pushing him into becoming a billionaire.
Ronaldo, 35, is ranked at No. 4 in the business magazine’s list of the world’s highest-paid figures in 2020, behind only Kylie Jenner, Kanye West and Roger Federer. Analysis suggesting he brought in $105 million before tax over the past year.
The list judges Messi to have made $104 million this year. The figures mark the latest, off-the-pitch chapter in a rivalry that has defined football over the past decade.
Both Ronaldo and Messi have won Ballon d’Or trophies five and six times respectively.
